Travelling with your dog takes some organization, but it's very doable. The key: prepare ahead, accustom them progressively, anticipate essential needs.
By car
- Transport crate or approved safety harness: mandatory in France
- Break every 2 hours: walk, water, play
- Never water or food in the hour before the trip
- Accustom gradually to trips: start short, increase slowly
- Familiar blanket in the crate for reassurance
Motion sickness
Motion sickness mainly affects puppies. It often fades around 12 months. For persistent cases, your vet can prescribe a suitable treatment. Air conditioning, a slightly open window and frequent short trips help.
Never leave a dog in a parked car, even with windows cracked. Temperature can reach 50 °C in minutes.
Travel abroad
- European pet passport required
- Electronic chip identification
- Valid rabies vaccination
- For some countries: anti-parasite treatment 24-120h before border crossing
- Check specific requirements of destination country
Accommodation
More and more hotels, guesthouses and campsites accept dogs. Book stating size and number. Bring their bed: a dog reassured by familiar markers is a calm dog. And respect the neighbors: no untimely barking.
“A well-prepared dog travels better than most humans. You just have to start early.
