How to choose the right kibble for your dog

The complete guide to reading labels and picking a recipe that fits

Choosing the right kibble is one of the most important decisions for your dog's health. Good nutrition directly affects energy, digestion, coat condition and longevity. Here are the key criteria to examine before buying.

Read the ingredient list

Ingredients are listed in decreasing order of weight. The first three represent most of the recipe. A quality recipe starts with a named meat (chicken, lamb, salmon) rather than generic "animal by-products" or "cereals".

  • Clearly named animal protein source at the top of the list
  • Protein level matched to age and activity (24% to 35% depending on profile)
  • Quality fats: salmon oil, poultry fat
  • Fibers and prebiotics for digestive comfort
  • No artificial colors or flavorings

Be wary of vague terms like "meat" or "cereals" with no specifics: these let the manufacturer vary the recipe without changing the label.

Match age and lifestyle

A growing puppy, a sporting dog and a senior don't have the same needs. Puppies require more protein and a precise calcium/phosphorus balance. Active dogs need more energy. Seniors benefit from digestible formulas with joint support.

The manufacturer matters

Traceability, country of origin and regular quality controls make the difference. Kibble made in France to strict standards delivers more consistent quality than an imported recipe with murky origins.

Good kibble isn't recognized by its price, but by the transparency of its composition and the consistency of its manufacturing.
